NNRM #3: (kimmy)
by Alyson Greaves
“I’ve lived a short life, and I’ve never had any control over my actions or my words. And do you know what a thought without expression is? It’s useless, Emily. That’s something I learned from Kay. If you’re going to live, you’ve got to actually fucking do it."
I am incapable of being normal about this book. I followed it as it was published serially online (with a never-ending onslaught of "penultimate" releases), and then re-read it in its final paperback published version.
This is close to the ur-example of why I love reading books by trans women - an entire side of my life experience gets to be seen.
As a child who first found freedom on IRC channels, the community that it provided me a place to discover myself while my physical self was trapped in the prison of my male body. The obsessive checking to see how out-of-spec my body was, and the love and acceptance I was able to find in female friendship and community - it's all here.
